Stem Cell treatment for Autism? By Dr. Santosh Joshi Classical Homeopath & Founder Dr. Joshi’s Center for Autism

Is it justified to give Stem cell treatment to children with Autism right now? Do parents really read what consent are they signing when they go in for these stem cell treatments? I think it is the hope that is created that the child will get alright but do we see the risk that we are taking? So many questions but few answers to these questions as these are early day when stem cell advance could help in treating Autism.

In the future when the cause of autism is established and further advances in stem cell may bring in the desired change that is expected. I am writing this article as we have seen parents spending huge amount of money on this and at the end are left high and dry. Few kids which we saw after they came from stem cell treatment had become overly aggressive in some the sensory issues had peaked up. But as usual once you have given the consent not much could be done so before you go in for such interventions:

Do ask your treating doctors about few of the following questions?
·         Does the Hospital have proper licence and compliance to carry stem cell treatment?
·         Is it a Clinical trial if yes then under which authority?
·         Cells and types?
·         Data on safety?
·         Methods and costs
·         Pathogens and additives?
·         Training and licence
·         Nature and type of labs

These are few of the questions that one should keep in mind. Currently there are various interventions which can bring lot of positive changes in the child, so it is prudent to wait till the stem cell therapy advances and also the exact cause of Autism is ascertained. We have seen children responding very well to Homeopathy, Therapies and Nutritional intervention that we carry out at our autism center.
With the Homeopathic medicines we have seen it has the capacity to treat the hyperactivity, behavioural issues and at the same time improve the comprehension and understanding of the child. We have seen the results are best seen when the child is under the age of 5 years at the same time teenagers have also responded well when the integrated approach was taken.

Said this the Homeopathic treatment is completely non-invasive and safe. We are also running various autism awareness campaigns across India via our shows and globally via social media.
Our aim is to bring the best available treatment to the children who are on the spectrum at the same time with the advances in stem cell in the future we may also start a full-fledged stem cell organization.

Let’s think before we put our children through any procedure think and take an informed decision do not get carried away with marketing gimmicks and false hopes.

FAQ's on Autism - Dr.Joshi's Center for Autism

FAQ's on Autism

1. What is Autism?
Autism is considered a spectrum disorder because symptoms and severity vary from individual to individual. Autistic children express differently from each other. Autism is characterized by failure of the child to develop communicative language or form proper social communication. But they show motor and other skills far beyond that of a mentally retarded child.

Autism is characterized by varying degrees of impairment to develop communicative language or form proper social communication. Some of them are obsessively pre occupied with inanimate objects such as lights, running water or spinning objects, and also by repetitive behaviors. Symptoms range from mild to severe. Some of them gradually develop extreme talents such as in mathematics and these are retained mostly throughout the life. Studies of people with autism have found abnormalities in several regions of the brain which suggest that autism results from a disruption of early fetal brain development

There is a milder form of the disorder known as Asperger's Syndrome. Other developmental disorders that fall under the Autism Spectrum Disorders are Rett's Syndrome, PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified), and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. If you have concerns about your child's development, don't wait: speak to your doctor about getting your child screened for autism.

Some children may display hypersensitivity to touch noise and other may have no sensory issues at all.

3. How common is autism?
According to the survey by Centers for Disease Control, autism affects as many as 1 in every 100 children and it is rising by 10-15% every year. 4. How do I know my child is Autistic?
No two children with autism are alike, each one managing a different set of symptoms. But there are some signs and symptoms that are common and may be recognized as early as the toddler years, or even sooner. They usually do not have or do not sustain eye contact and have trouble communicating with other people or they may communicate in ways that others cannot easily understand. They may hardly speak and even if they speak it's just babbling and not coherent. They're also prone to repetitive behaviors like flapping their hands constantly or uttering the same phrase over and over again. They may also be over sensitive to sights, sounds and touch.

Genes are not the only one responsible for all the cases; there are other triggers which are yet not discovered.

6. Does vaccination cause autism ?
Many studies have been conducted to determine if a link exists between vaccination and increased prevalence of autism, with particular attention to the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and those containing thimerosal. These studies have not found a link between vaccines and autism It remains possible that, in cases, immunization might trigger the onset of autism symptoms in a child with an underlying medical or genetic condition.

Gluten free / Casein free diet for Autism by Dr.Varsha Patel Joshi - Nutritionist

A Gluten-free/Casein-free diet is also commonly known as the GFCF diet. When one is following this diet all foods containing gluten and casein are eliminated from the daily dietary intake.

How does a gluten-free/casein-free diet help in Autism treatment?
By following a GFCF diet it is observed by parents of autistic children that there is improvement in their speech and behavior.

In theory it is believed that children with autism can be allergic or sensitive to gluten or casein. Autistic children process peptides and proteins in food differently than others the chemicals which might be the end result of this processing are recognized by the brain as opiates. The reaction to these chemicals can precipitate autistic symptoms. Even though the above theory is not scientifically supported, parents of autistic children have seen considerable improvement in their children following the GFCF diet.

Foods that contain gluten
Gluten is a type of protein found in grains like barley, bran, wheat (kamut and spelt ( variety of wheat) and rye, malts (Malt is germinated cereal grains that have been dried in a process known as "malting".), and triticale (Triticale is a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale)). For a gluten free diet oats are also eliminated from diet though oats is not one of the gluten foods. As there is lots of chances of cross contamination by wheat / rye during milling, also oats may be contaminated when grown in rotation with wheat.

Foods that contain Casein
Casein is a protein found in dairy products and other foods containing dairy or lactose.

Risks of deficiencies for following gluten free / casein free diet
GFCF diet leads to deficiency of nutrients like folate, iron, fiber and certain B vitamins. GFCF diet followers are at a risk for anemia (especially Iron Deficiency Anemia) and low blood calcium levels or poor bone health.

Tips for Following a GFCF Diet without leading to deficiencies:
  • Opt for whole foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts.
  • Carefully read the nutrition labels for Gluten and casein.
  • One can opt for gluten free oats for breakfast.
  • Opt for high fiber brown rice bread or brown rice for lunch.
  • One can opt for Quinoa as a side dish for dinner.
  • Include green leafy vegetables for your meals.
Adding these few things in your GFCF diet will help significantly improve the values of certain B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and zinc.

Do not self diet; always consult a Qualified Nutritionist who can guide you better.
